One of the benefits of MIG welding is the flexibility to weld a wide range of metals. Steel, stainless steel, cast iron and brazing are relatively simple, requiring no more attention than changing the shielding gas. Aluminum is an entirely different animal.
Due to its softness and heat conductivity characteristics, extra care and special accessories must be used to ensure good results. Aluminum is much softer than steel. It will "bird's nest" using a standard steel liner. Therefore, a low-friction teflon liner is necessary to keep the soft aluminum wire from bird's nesting. Aluminum requires a higher flow rate of Argon gas (roughly 30 - 50 CFM). The cylindrical nozzle, with its larger opening, ensures adequate dispersion of this gas. Unlike steel, aluminum will not tolerate paint, oxidation, grease or any other contaminants when being welded. The importance of proper surface preparation cannot be over stressed.
First, all surfaces to be welded should be vigorously brushed with our Stainless Wire Brush (a plain steel brush will simply further contaminate the aluminum). This may seem like a lot of work, but attention to these details can help ensure that you save time, by getting it right the first time. More importantly, it can save you from ruining that irreplaceable part! Our Aluminum Welding Kit gives you everything you need to achieve good results.
